"The Underpants"
(a Comedy/Farce)
by Carl
Sternheim, Adapted by Steve Martin
Produced & Directed by Cynthia Frabutt
Presented by Dearborn Heights Civic Theatre
The play, a farce
set in 1910 Germany, centers on a young married couple and the scandal that
follows after the wife’s underpants fall down in public, as they wait to see
the king passing by in a parade. The incident embarrasses the usually
inattentive husband and makes the wife an unwitting object of desire. In
fact, shortly after the parade, two men come to the couple’s home,
ostensibly to rent a space room, but more interested in wooing the wife. Or
so it seems.
The Underpants is a farce sparked by the unmentionables of a
bureaucrat's wife falling down in public. Playwright Steve Martin has well
adapted the original comedy by Carl Sternheim into a smart and funny play on
the ridiculousness of how people deal with their sexual desires.
The intimate
staging is in the half-round with multiple levels.
All
performances of "The Underpants" will be in support of disaster relief and
the Red Cross. With audience participation, Dearborn Heights Civic Theatre
is donating new, unopened, packaged undergarments to The Red Cross with your
help. For every package of new underwear (shirts or bottoms; child's or
adult) that each patron donates, their name will be entered in a raffle for
a $50 gift card to Victoria's Secret, Macy's, Target, drawn nightly, at each
performance! The more underwear donated, the more opportunity to enter the
raffle as well as help others in great need. So come 'Drop your drawers',
open your hearts, and join us for an evening of laughter and ... underpants.
